Twenty-two-year old Izbasa kept her feet firmly on the ground after winning the vault competition at the European Championships in March. “It is gold here, but it will be tougher in London,” she said after the meet. That’s true, but her performances during qualifications make it pretty clear she could walk away with some new hardware. The defending Olympic champion on floor exercise, she posted the second-highest score on that event, and also qualified second on the vault. She played it relatively safe on the vault during qualifications. But during podium training she threw a risky “Cheng”—a vault that carries the same difficulty as the more famous Amanar. If Izbasa goes for broke and lands on her feet, vault favorite McKayla Maroney will want to take notice.
