Mustafina dominated the 2010 world championships, winning the all-around and convincing pundits that she was the new It Girl of gymnastics. She had to sit out last season after tearing her ACL in April 2011, and only returned to training last December. Critics called her underwhelming at the European Championships this spring. But the 17-year old issued a firm rebuke to her detractors during qualifications, posting the fifth-highest all-around score, and making the finals on beam and floor. With her confidence rising and her artistry unwavering, Mustafina may be returning to form at just the right time.
