In February, at age 14, 10-m platform diver Carolina Mendoza became one of the youngest athletes ever to qualify for the Olympics. In April the Mexican teen turned 15, the age at which China’s Chen Ruolin, whom Mendoza will face in London, won the 10-m platform gold medal in Beijing in 2008. Mendoza, whose coach describes her as “fearless” — in 2010 she returned to competition just a few weeks after a training accident required facial stitches and nose surgery — finished fifth at this year’s world championships. In London she’s a good bet to bring home Mexico’s first individual women’s Olympic diving medal.
