One of the major art commissions at the Olympic Park, ‘History Trees’ fuses nature and art with trees bedecked with giant metal rings. The ten semi-mature trees — each a different species, from Silver Lime to English Oak — will stand at the entrances to the Olympic Park. Three have already arrived at their new home, while the remaining seven will be planted after the Games. Each tree will bear a bronze or stainless steel ring weighing up to 500kg in its branches, engraved with text detailing history from the location. The artists behind the work, Ackroyd and Harvey, said the artwork will “transform as the seasons change, reflecting the evolving nature of the Olympic Park.”
The Quirky Art of Britain’s Cultural Olympiad
In order to showcase Britain's arts and heritage during the Olympic Games, the U.K. government has bestowed $150 million on the Cultural Olympiad and its accompanying London 2012 Festival, which runs from June 21 to September 9. The results of that investment include a towering Lady Godiva puppet and a taxidermy-style crocheted lion. Is Britain's Olympic art any good? You be the judge
