The finale to the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver didn’t exactly go according to plan. The intent was for five Canadian sporting legends to light the flame, but speedskater Catriona Le May Doan didn’t get her moment in the spotlight. While wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen, skier Nancy Greene, basketball star Steve Nash and the one and only Wayne Gretzky were on three pillars that rose up correctly, Le May Doan’s pillar malfunctioned, leaving her holding a blazing torch but with nothing to douse it in. She gamely saluted the crowd, but she must have been burning up inside.
