Before Joseph L. Mankiewicz achieved greatness with All About Eve, he was making audiences cackle with Million Dollar Legs. In it W.C. Fields plays the president of Klopstokia—a mythical country teetering on bankruptcy. Luckily for all concerned, it turns out that the citizens of Klopstokia are stellar athletes. That gives visiting salesman Migg Tweeney (Jack Oakie) an inspired idea: Klopstokia will enter the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, where its athletes can collect financial rewards that his company is offering to medalists. But Klopstokia’s athletes don’t merely face challenges from their fellow Olympians. Conspiratorial cabinet members, who hope to overthrow the president, attempt to undermine the athletes with the aid of sultry seductress Mata Machree (Lyda Roberti), “the woman no man can resist.”
