In his final-ever role, Cary Grant portrayed British businessman Sir William Rutland for this remake of the 1943 film The More the Merrier. Set in Tokyo during the 1964 Summer Olympics, the film opens with Grant struggling to find a place to stay as a result of the housing shortage brought on by the Olympics. Aided by the British Embassy, he makes his way into the home of Christine Easton (Samantha Eggar), who would have preferred to live with another woman. Rutland proceeds to sublet half of his space to Steve Davis (Jim Hutton), a member of the United States race walking team. Grant soon transforms from tenant to matchmaker—and with exquisite comic timing. You’ll see where the film is headed before the characters do, but that’s part of the fun.
