British Olympian Tom Daley took to YouTube to come out to the world.
“In spring this year my life changed massively when I met someone,” the 19-year-old diver said in the video posted Dec. 2. “They make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. That someone is a guy.” Daley, who won a bronze medal in the 2012 London games and is considered something of a heartthrob to diving fans, said that he does “fancy girls” and the relationship took him “by surprise a little bit.” He also added that, “It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen.”
Daley also says in the video that he believes in honesty, adding, “I’ve never really had a serious relationship to talk about and now I kind of feel ready to talk about my relationships.” He goes on to say, “People are going to have their own opinions and I think people are going to make a big deal about this. Is it a big deal? I don’t think so. I wanted to say something and I feel like now I am ready to do it.”
The 2016 Rio hopeful also said that his mother supported his decision to come out, while fans and friends took to social media to support him.
