British Olympian Tom Daley took to YouTube to come out to the world.

“In spring this year my life changed massively when I met someone,” the 19-year-old diver said in the video posted Dec. 2. “They make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. That someone is a guy.” Daley, who won a bronze medal in the 2012 London games and is considered something of a heartthrob to diving fans, said that he does “fancy girls” and the relationship took him “by surprise a little bit.” He also added that, “It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen.”

Daley also says in the video that he believes in honesty, adding, “I’ve never really had a serious relationship to talk about and now I kind of feel ready to talk about my relationships.” He goes on to say, “People are going to have their own opinions and I think people are going to make a big deal about this. Is it a big deal? I don’t think so. I wanted to say something and I feel like now I am ready to do it.”

The 2016 Rio hopeful also said that his mother supported his decision to come out, while fans and friends took to social media to support him.

I like  “I’ve never really had a serious relationship to talk about and now I kind of feel ready to talk about my relationships.” He goes on to say, “People are going to have their own opinions and I think people are going to make a big deal about this. Recall when a person's sexuality was a PRIVATE matter. What does he want the world to do, now that he has "come out"? Does he get a prize?

@DeanKlovensMore and more people are coming out because homosexuality is finally becoming socially acceptable. People are no longer living in the past, as most people of at least reasonable intelligence in modern society realize that homosexuality is not something that can be cured or changed-- it is simply a part of who these people are, just as heterosexuality is for you or me (I assume you're straight, but one can never know for sure because people do often speak out against homosexuality in order to cover up their own questioning of their sexual orientation...).

@RobertJ.Spreitzer No but he gets the gay world to ask him out and their protection, you know the gay mafia, very serious people and dangerous .

@Openminded1 @RobertJ.Spreitzer that's unfair. He said specifically that he was getting questions from the media about who he had been seeing and such. All he wanted to do was come out with this himself, without the media being able to skew his words. Besides, coming out is a huge step that takes a lot of time just work it out with oneself. Part of the coping process can be to vocalize it. So much of life is spent with the secret, and that secret eats away at you. Sometimes putting it out there helps to relive that pressure. I think what he did was brave and I think he should be applauded for it. Sexuality loses its status as a private matter as soon as the media comes at you with questions.

@KConk2014 @Openminded1 @RobertJ.Spreitzer Life is unfair in many ways. I grew up in the 50's and 60's things were better no face book no internet and a lot more privacy. All that modern tec stuff is great in some ways. But it also has made the young a hell of a lot more lazy. Big brother has to much of a hold on all of us everyone is now an open book.
