Day Job: Landscaper
South Africa’s Karen Hultzer successfully juggles a six-hour-a-day training regime with running her own landscaping business, but she’s probably best known for coming out as a lesbian in the midst of the Olympics, becoming only the 23rd openly gay athlete at the London Games. Hultzer told Reuters: “We need to stand up as role models to show that it is not bad to be gay and it is normal.” She added: “The more we come out and talk about it, the more people should realize that being gay is a non-issue and we can progress.” She waited until after her event finished to make her announcement.
